31 Days of Crafting: Prepping for the Paper Trail

March is National Craft Month! All month long we will be sharing stories from your peers about what they are doing to celebrate and how they are encouraging others to discover the benefits of creativity.

To celebrate National Craft Month, CHA Designer Eileen Hull is getting Scotty and Big Daddy ready for Paper Trail 9!

Scotty-rides-again

In 2013, Eileen bought a vintage trailer and outfitted it as a mobile studio. Since then she has been touring the country in Scotty and teaching classes in independent stores, art galleries and at events, retreats and trade shows. You may have spotted the pair on the Show floor at the CHA MEGA Show in January doing #Cre8time make and takes! The projects were designed and taught by many well-known CHA Designers using products generously donated by the Paper Trail sponsors: SizzixCrescent CardboardThermOWebCrafter’s HomeGraphic 45ClearsnapSakuraBeacon AdhesivesLittle BDecoArt, and M-D Hobby and Craft.

One of the highlights of the Paper Trail 9 is the Quartermain House Creative Retreat. CHA Designer members Lorine Mason, Cheryl Boglioli, Marie Browning and Laura Kelly are headed north to Fredericton, Canada for an art retreat at fellow designer friend Debra Quartermain’s B & B. The cost of $350 includes a Friday night reception, two full days of workshops (all supplies included), and lunch both on Saturday and Sunday. All are invited to attend!

Read more about Eileen’s journey on her blog.

Stay tuned for more stories and tips on the CHA Blog and all of CHA’s social media channels.

Keep us informed of your events that encourage creativity all year long. Tell us your story by emailing marketing@craftandhobby.org or using the hashtags #WeAreCHA and #CRE8TIME on social media and we will share it!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

My favorite manicure is ink-stained fingers. When I travel I usually pack two outfits and a suitcase jammed with scissors, sketchbooks, inks, brushes, and a ridiculous number of pencils.

The light in my studio burns into the wee small hours because I forget to notice what time it is. Creativity is so energizing.

I’m thrilled to partner with some of the very best manufacturers to marry my art with their products. When I count my blessings the list is endless.

How many years have you participated in the CHA MEGA Conference & Trade Show?

I can’t even remember when I went to my first CHA; it was that long ago! But every year seems better than the one before. Not only have I had the joy of seeing my designs featured on products from the best manufacturers in the industry, but I get to “ooh and aah” over new products all over the Show floor!

What is your favorite part of the CHA MEGA Conference & Trade Show?

Best of all is getting to see my art come alive as product! It’s so wonderful to see people enjoying and crafting with what my scissors, brushes and inks began. Wandering the Show floor and getting to explore all the creative goodness in the form of crafting materials is like a shopping trip in the most amazing artsy shop on earth. It’s where I find the tools to fuel and inspire my further creativity as an artist and a designer.

How would you describe a live workshop at the CHA MEGA Conference & Trade Show to someone who has never attended before?

Imagine sitting down with your newest group of friends – the most creative and gifted designers in our industry – to laugh, connect and craft together. That’s a live workshop!

I hope you will be attending my workshop because I’d love to meet and share my secret crafting tips with you!

Why should buyers and creative professionals take your workshop?

It’ll be a lot of fun! Yet, the real reason a buyer should attend is – bottom line – it will help you sell more product. I love the joy of crafting together, but the fact is that knowing more about the designer, the way they use the materials in ways that are fresh and different (and the fact that you’re rubbing shoulders with the top artists in the industry), will give you an edge and improve your sales figures.

How does your workshop relate to emerging trends and the current state of the creative industry?

Crafters want to feel like THEY designed the projects, and they want them to look absolutely fantastic. They want every dime they spend to bring more value to their crafting stash. This workshop will show you how to achieve that.

What do you love most about the creative industry?

I love being a maker. This industry offers me the tools I can use to leap in any creative direction I choose. There is a whole world of possibility in something as simple as a bottle of ink or pair of scissors. How could anything be more exciting than that?

Where do you see the creative industry in five years?

I’m not at all certain where this industry will go, but I know for sure that consumers will always be looking for the next wonderful tool to enhance their own individual creative journey. Manufacturers and distributors that offer the tools that appeal to a consumer’s “gotta see what I can do with THAT!” mindset will never lack an audience.

Register to take Sizzix Designer Showcase and our other CHA MEGA Conference programs before they sell out! Stay tuned on the CHA blog later this week when we will meet Tammy Tutterow of Tammy Tutterow Designs.

Hot Product Showcase Success Story – Sizzix/Ellison

hotprodsThe Hot Product Showcase at the CHA MEGA Conference & Trade Show recognizes outstanding innovation, design and function in consumer craft products. In addition to getting eyed by thousands of buyers, these products are judged by a panel of media, celebrity and industry judges for a chance to earn the prestigious title of the Hot Product Award winner. The panel critiques products submitted in each of eight categories (Bead & Jewelry, Cake & Food Decorating, Fabric & Needle Craft, Floral Craft, General Craft, Kids Craft, Paint & Art, and Paper Craft), and ultimately selects the Hot Product Award winners from each.

SizzixInksheetsSo, how does being a Hot Product Award winner make your product hot? Here’s what Cara Mariano, Art Director at Sizzix/Ellison, knows. Last year, Sizzix Inksheets by Sizzix/Ellison won the 2015 Hot Product Award for Paper Crafts.

“We entered the Hot Product Awards because we felt our Sizzix Inksheets complement our entire Sizzix product line and allow consumers to craft creative, inspiring projects.

We’re thrilled to have been recognized for product ingenuity and to have our Inksheets flying off the shelves! Due to growing consumer demand, we are releasing three new colors this fall and will continue to add additional color options.

The Hot Product Awards serves as a great platform for manufacturers to have their product seen by key market people including social media bloggers and major retail chains, which can result in fantastic opportunities!”

Submit your new craft product or prototype to the 2016 Hot Product Showcase by November 16 for a chance to be the next Sizzix Inksheets”. Stay tuned next week for more success stories from our Hot Product Award winners.

Meet Eileen Hull of Ellison/Sizzix!

We are getting to know some of our Paper Arts+ workshop teachers in this “Meet the Teachers” blog post series. Through the series, you will learn about their art and inspiration, the value in attending their workshops, and what you can expect to learn. This week we meet Eileen Hull, designer at Ellison/Sizzix!

ehull

Roll up your sleeves for Eileen’s workshop, Sizzix Faux Wood Grain Sewing Basket! You will craft an adorable (and functional) fold-out sewing basket! Eileen will teach you a unique inking technique using her ColorBox Blends inks that mimics a real wood grain effect. When you show your customers the finished product, they will NEED to make at least one! Plus, you can count on getting some swag to take home!

What was your first experience with crafting?
When I was a little girl, my sisters and I loved to play with dolls. We made doll dresses, accessories and, my personal favorite, doll furniture. We would find scraps of fabric and cardboard, and spend hours creating together while singing along with the Sound of Music.

Did you always know that you wanted to be an artist/designer?
Not really! My schooling is in community health education, so I always figured I would do that when I grew up. Then I married a military man, and it was hard to keep a job when we were moving around so much. I started to cross-stitch to make wedding and baby gifts, and visited the arts and crafts shop on post to frame my work; that’s when I fell in love with mat board. Then I had kids, so designing seemed to be a good way to make a little money while staying home with the four of them.

Eventually, I accumulated way more supplies than I needed and decided to see if I could exhibit at some craft shows. I wound up doing craft shows for years and learned a lot about business. That was the turning point for me.

What inspires you?
Creative people, nature, music and patterns – pretty much everything! I always have a notebook nearby so I can jot down all of the ideas that run through my head. The other day I had an idea for a die right as I was waking up. I immediately sketched it out and when I made it, it worked! Hooray for notebooks!

Tell us how you started your Paper Trail teaching with your vintage trailer, Scotty?
In 2013, I bought my 1976 vintage Serro Scotty trailer, outfitted it as a mobile studio and took it on the road. I traveled around the country teaching classes using my Sizzix dies and Clearsnap inks. I have logged over 13,000 miles, visited 22 states, taught in 39 stores and venues, and met hundreds of people. It has been the most exciting adventure I’ve ever taken. My kids are grown and my husband is very patient, which allows me to road trip guilt free!

What value would you place on attending classes offered at live conferences such as the Paper Arts+ Show?
There is nothing like seeing new products in person to truly understand all the possibilities for using them. Meeting with manufacturers and retailers face-to-face is very important to me. Getting to know them has been invaluable for my career.

What are the top takeaways that attendees will learn by taking your workshop?
I am excited to be teaching a class on a brand new kind of die that I designed. You can expect to learn tons of tips and tricks, like how to extend the lifespan of your dies. Also, something really fun will be happening with Scotty! Follow CHA and me on social media to find out what it is!

The Paper Arts+ Show is around the corner and Show registration is open! Register for Sizzix Faux Wood Grain Sewing Basket today! Online registration closes on Tuesday, July 14!

“Meet the Teachers” Blog Series: Meet Stephanie Barnard of Sizzix!

We are getting to know some of our Paper Arts+ workshop teachers in this “Meet the Teacher” blog post series. Throughout the series, you will learn about their art and inspiration, the value in attending their workshops, and what you can expect to learn.

barnardOur second featured teacher is Stephanie Barnard of Sizzix.

Stephanie’s Card Making is Hot! workshop will take place on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. In this class, attendees will create two cards using Stephanie’s Sizzix line; they will learn about award winning ink sheets and drop-ins, plus lots of tips and tricks. Card making is becoming more and more popular. Make sure your store knows about and carries the hottest Sizzix dies on the market!

Tell us a little about yourself.
If it’s possible to live, breathe, eat and sleep card making and stamping, I’m giving it my best shot.  At Sizzix, I’m the spokesperson and research and development consultant. Also, I’m a licensed designer for Sizzix and Clearsnap, and possess a drive to create innovative, cutting-edge products.

What do you love most about the creative industry?
I love that I have been warmly welcomed as a professional in this industry. It’s an honor to share my passion for creativity and inspire others.

What do you love most about teaching workshops?
Teaching workshops is an opportunity for me to connect with students. I learn just as much from them as they do from me. I value suggestions and feedback. Oh, and I love to hear where everyone has traveled from to be at the event!

What value would you place on attending classes offered at live conferences such as the Paper Arts+ Show?
I’ve never been to a class where I haven’t had at least one valuable experience. Attending shows is all about what you can take back to your customers – new products and new knowledge are equally important. Never stop learning.

What are the top takeaways that attendees will learn by taking your workshop?
Students will learn tons of tips and tricks for using my products in conjunction with all the specialty accessories in the Sizzix line. Also, there is nothing comparable to trying out a product yourself!

When you’re not teaching, what can we find you doing?
I really want to say drinking Diet Coke, but I do that during class too. Chances are you’d probably find me on an airplane traveling to teach another class or in my home studio designing new products. While I love doing all the things I just mentioned, my heart is really with my family. So, it’s likely you’d find me taking walks or snuggling with Ken, my girls or our dog Cookie!

After a long day of workshops and seminars, attendees, sponsors and vendors, unwound and got to know one another at the Welcome Reception last night, sponsored by Anna Griffin.

We had a great time relaxing and just hanging out, making new friends in the industry and reconnecting with industry friends.

recep1

I really enjoyed meeting some of these wonderful company representatives that I have admired from afar. I spoke to the lovely people from Kaiserkraft, here all the way from Australia. Much to my surprise, I found a friend here; Paulette from The Scrapbook Princess in Moody, AL. What a surprise!

I had a lovely chat with the good folks at Petaloo and learned about the laminating and home use for products at Photo Max.

recep2You can see that everyone was having a good time and were enjoying the sneak peeks at the Exhibit Hall. Lots of new and exciting products are on display, particularly for the upcoming holiday season. I spied more than a few items that caught my interest.

recep7Earlier in the day I caught the marketing seminar and heard Denzil Quick sharing tips on how to improve your cash flow. He spoke about moving your inventory, developing a tracking system and not becoming so attached to your stock that it hinders cash flow. Very insightful and thought provoking.

marketseminar1The highlight of my evening, not only getting a sneak peak at all these great, wonderful products, was meeting Mr. Andrej Suskavcevic, President and CEO of the Craft & Hobby Association. What a thrill!

Looking forward to all that today at the CHA 2014 Paper Arts Show holds!

Good Afternoon from Atlanta!

Welcome to the CHA 2014 Paper Arts Show in Atlanta!

I jumped right into the first session, Spellbinders and Richard Garay. He has a new line of stamps dies and embossing folders called Cele’brations.

wpid-wp-1406659682694.jpeg
We dove right in making some super cute projects. First we made this adorable card using the pierced square dies. All of the projects we worked on were bagged in kit format so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. What I really appreciate is the way the dies and stamps coordinate and complement one another. The Spellbinders inks really pop too. No “barely there” ink pads; these inks are bold in color and our stamped images looked so clean and crisp on cardstock.

I love The enthusiasm and patience that Mr. Garay exudes. He’s a fabulous teacher and so interactive. The entire staff were there every step of the way, assisting with techniques and helping answer any and every question.

Look at the adorable projects we made!
20140729_094801

I especially love the new Cele’brations Doily Arts embossing folders. Doilies are super popular right now and this folder is gorgeous! A trick I learned is, when inking your embossing folder for letterpress, use the thickest side of the folder. And be sure to get your ink pad into all corners for the best coverage. Good to know!

This was such a great class and I really learned a lot.

Next, I rushed to Graphic 45 where Jeff Filimoehala and the lovely and vintage Joanna carried us to another time and place with the gorgeous “Come Away With” papers and products. The participants in this workshop learned how to make a beautiful shadow box complete with decorative hardware, and a stash of embellishments contained inside. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the process of putting this kit together. Jeff was an excellent instructor, and really livened up the workshop with some giveaways. An added bonus to an already fun gathering.

Here’s Joanna.

wpid-wp-1406660011695.jpegIsn’t this shadow box beautiful? Pictures really don’t do it justice. The colors of this collection are truly stunning.

Next it was on to Sizzix and Stephanie Barnard. This class focused on Framelits, Triplets and Gatefold cards. Stephanie is super bubbly and an excellent teacher, engaging everyone with her style of crafting. My classmates are hanging on her every word and are geared up for a fun, informative workshop. I love when instructors give handy tips and tricks of the trade. Did you know you should fold a flip-it card in the air, not on the table? And, you want the bottom of the card larger than the top, folding it towards you with the flap on top. Those are tips I can use. Now you can too! Stephanie is also giving marketing tips to the store owners here at the workshop too. Knowledge is power people!

sizzix 2Thanks to Kelly Nufer for allowing me to photo her cutting techniques with the Framelits. She really had the hang of it. Look how great these cards turned out.
