31 Days of Crafting: Creative Crocheting

March is National Craft Month! All month long we will be sharing stories from your peers about what they are doing to celebrate and how they are encouraging others to discover the benefits of creativity.

Janice Ogata likes to encourage people to use materials other than yarn to step out of their comfort zone and be creative. Janice is the founder of the Pasadena Crochet Group in California. The group has been meeting on the first Saturday of each the month at a local bookstore for the past seven years. These crocheters have used wire, plastic grocery bags, cut-up t-shirts and VHS tapes, just to name a few of the non-traditional materials that they’ve experimented with. They’ve yarn bombed an entire museum in Los Angeles with hundreds of Granny Squares, and the historical Alex Theatre to celebrate its 90th Anniversary.

“A lot of people get bogged down thinking what they’re making has to be perfect. I try to keep them motivated, and reassure them they can just call a tiny mistake a ‘design element’ and move on, instead of ripping apart their whole project. The joy for me as a teacher is seeing the look of satisfaction on my students’ faces when they complete their first project. I teach all ages, men, women and children, and almost everyone has the same reaction. They can’t believe they crocheted something!”

JaniceOgata2Janice also teaches at Needle in a Haystack on the third Saturday of the each month. Her patterns have been published in Craft Ideas Magazine, and she is a blogger for Red Heart Yarns.

If you want to crochet creatively this National Craft Month, you can contact Janice at janiceogata@gmail.com.

At the end of the chase, chasers win prizes from event sponsors based on 1) how many stores they visit; 2) the amount of money they spent, and 3) the numbers of pictures they posted on social media. Participating stores offer discounts, exclusive page kits, make-n-takes, themed photo ops, giveaways and more!
